Be Prepared to Communicate
We receive inquiries from all kinds of businesses with all kinds of goals. Almost all have dozens of questions, as they should… this isn’t usually something they get done every day.
However, the challenge comes in when they aren’t looking to actually communicate. These are the folks who are super brief, and are just looking to “get a bunch of quotes to show their boss.”
Don’t be this person! This is a surefire way to wind up with something that doesn’t make you or your boss very happy. It’s essentially the fast lane towards a bad experience.
Be ready to communicate openly, and a good photographer will keep things simple and moving swiftly. You’ll be on the road to getting what you need ASAP!
Ask The Right Questions
Clients either know exactly what they think they want, or they have a really vague idea about the direction they want to go in. It’s not uncommon for a team to brainstorm what they would ideally like to do, and have a swarm of ideas which may or may not work well.
Can we do all of these, what would that entail, etc.? These are the questions to ask! An experienced photographer will give you the ins, outs, and tradeoffs, as well as what may or may not be the best way to go about something.
This is your chance to tap into the extensive knowledge and experience of a real pro. You will quickly find out who actually knows their stuff, who is honest, and learn a lot about what you should do in the process.
Apples to Apples
I don’t know of a company who doesn’t want to get the most bang for their buck. You’ll never get it if you aren’t certain you’re comparing apples to apples.
Photographers will assume you are shopping around, but the key is to make sure you are comparing the same offerings. It doesn’t make sense to ask one photographer for an extensive quote that includes all the bells and whistles, while getting a bare-bones quote from another.
In the end, to make the best decision, you need the right information in front of you!
Oh, logistics… all those details. A huge part of doing photography as a business involves making sure the details of a shoot line up so things move smoothly. A good photographer doesn’t just “make pretty pictures with a really nice camera.” Instead, they know how to run a shoot, and what to do when things get off track.
Work with someone who gets it and has been around the block a few times. Don’t make the mistake of assuming “Eh, it’s just some pictures… we’ll figure it out.” That’s a recipe for disaster!
Shot List Collaboration
This one is huge! For commercial shoots, you absolutely must make sure the photographer you have chosen is in the loop when you are coming up with the list of shots you are looking to create! Fail to do so, and you can end up costing yourself time and money!
Imagine you’re setting up a shoot where you will be creating images in a number of locations with a host of different subjects (ex: environmental portraits at a medical center). While the marketing director, graphics team, and other stakeholders may know what their vision is, a chat with the photographer may reveal that there are additional considerations they hadn’t thought of.
Will there need to be additional time to transport gear to and from locations? What kind of lighting setup is needed, and how long will that take to prepare?
It’s even worse to present the list to the photographer at the end of the process. Here, you may find that a lot of alterations may be needed to make the plan a success. Do it right, and involve the photography company from the start!
Set Expectations with Photo Subjects
Are you pulling the CEO and other execs in for headshots, or perhaps you are using a staff member as a stand-in for a customer in a shoot. Either way, be sure that you’ve connected with the photographer about what to expect and explained this to the subject.
A good photographer will expect busy executives to have a limited attention span and work efficiently to accommodate while understanding how to handle different limitations/time considerations with subjects.

Trust the Photographer
You’ve chosen the photographer you want to work with based on a number of factors, so now it’s time to trust their advice.
